2023 CAMPAIGN

Saving Mothers is a global nonprofit dedicated to eradicating preventable maternal deaths and birth-related complications among marginalized women. More broadly, they envision a world where every woman – regardless of ethnicity or socioeconomic status – has access to quality reproductive healthcare services, and receives proper medical attention for complications of pregnancy and childbirth.

Tragically, maternal mortality is increasing in the United States. New York City has seen sharp racial disparities in maternal mortality rates. Black women are 9 times more likely to face pregnancy-related deaths compared to non-Hispanic white women. Building on their extensive experience in the developing world, Saving Mothers developed a program to serve minority women in NYC. Our campaign funded birthing kits, education and self-advocacy training.

Key Challenges

  • Developing nations: Inadequate training, insufficient supplies, distance to healthcare, and cultural biases.

  • In the United States: Lack of proper prenatal care and systemic racism affecting women of color.
