Our 2011 Campaign:
Mothers' Day Movement raised over $135,000 for Shining Hope for Communities in 2011 including a $10,000 grant from the Oak Foundation. This outpouring of support for SHOFCO came from over 2,000 individual donors looking to make Mother's Day more meaningful in their lives. Donations were made in honor of grandmothers, mothers, friends, sisters and daughters. |
Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO) is an is an organization founded by a young visionary named Kennedy Odede who was born and raised in Kibera, Nairobi, Kenya's most economically depressed area. Because of incredible hardship in his family, Kennedy dedicated himself to helping women and children in Kibera, where 1 in 5 children do not live to see their 5th birthday. Together with Jessica Posner, an American student from Wesleyan University in Connecticut, they knew they wanted to make a difference. They have built SHOFCO into a force for change in Kibera and currently operate the Kibera School for Girls, the Shining Hope Community Center and the Johanna Justin-Jinich (JJJ) Community Clinic of Kibera.
